The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is pleased to present a number of concerts and educational events each season, centered around organ and choral music. Most of these programs are open to the public, with free admission; we invite members and non-members alike to attend our public events. Organ and Instruments

Stewart W. Foster, Organist

Organist Stewart W. Foster joins a string quartet to perform Handel's organ Concerto No. 4 in F Major, Four Noels for Organ and Strings arranged by Albert Zabel, and "Meditation" by Peter Mathews. Solo works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Philip Glass and Maurice Duruflé will also be presented. This varied repertoire will be enhanced by the crisp and clear voicing of the Beckerath tracker organ in the Episcopal Center.

S. Wayne Foster is one of the nation’s most accomplished organists, winning numerous prizes and performing recitals on some of the world’s most prestigious pipe organs. In his role as Organist-in-Residence of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, he continues to amaze audiences every week with his vast repertoire and artistry in playing one of the world’s largest pipe organs.

Mr. Foster completed a double major in French and Organ/Church music and later studied in Paris with Suzanne Chaisemartin. While in Paris he also worked in a French organ-building firm. Mr. Foster also completed an advanced degree in Early Music and Harpsichord Performance. In 1997 he won both the Gold Medal and the Audience Prize at the First Triennial Dallas International Organ Competition. Mr. Foster has toured both the U.S. and Europe playing organ and harpsichord performances to great critical acclaim. Mr. Foster Organist-in-Residence of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles.

Organist Jean Guillou, master performer, composer, improvisor, and innovator, consistently delights audiences with unique repertoire choices, unusual registrations, and phenomenal technique.

Following studies in piano and organ performance, Jean Guillou became organist at the church St. Serge in Angers at the age of 12. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Marcel Dupré, Maurice Duruflé and Olivier Messiaen. He has been Titular Organist at Saint Eustache in Paris since his appointment in 1963 when he succeeded André Marchal.

He has a worldwide reputation as a brilliant concert organist and improviser. Additionally, he often performs as pianist. As a composer, he has written more than 80 works for organ, chamber and orchestral music, as well as numerous transcriptions for organ.

Su-Ryeon Ji, Organist

Organist Su-Ryeon Ji, a native of Korea, was awarded the first place in the American Guild of Organists Regional Competition for Young Organists in Little Rock, Arkansas. Subsequently, she was invited to perform at the AGO National Convention in Denver, Colorado. The performance was later broadcast nationwide. Over the past 10 years, she has been performing numerous recitals at different venues throughout the USA, Europe and South Korea.

Ms. Ji received the Master’s Degree in Organ Performance and the Graduate Certificate from the University of Southern California, Flora L. Thornton School of Music where she was a student of Cherry Rhodes. Her Bachelor’s Degree in Organ Performance was earned at the University of Texas with Dr. Frank Speller. Upon completing her Master’s degree, she became a pupil of Jacques van Oortmerssen at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where she explored various historic organs.

She has participated in master classes with Anthony Newman, Olivier Latry, Jean Guillou, David Craighead, Marilyn Keiser, Alan Morrison, Pierre Pincemaille, Kimberly Marshall, Gillian Weir (at the Calgary International Organ Festival) and Harald Feller (in Munich) and many others. She also has taught at the Sacred Music Institute in South Korea.

Currently, she is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance. A recipient of the Irene Robertson scholarship, Ms Ji has continued to study with Cherry Rhodes at the University of Southern California, Flora L. Thornton School of Music.

Organist Diane Meredith Belcher brings to the music world performances of rare artistry; her stirringly expressive, dazzlingly clear, and astoundingly virtuosic playing has thrilled audiences throughout the United States, in Europe and Canada since her solo debut at age fifteen. Among her many recital credits are Grace Cathedral, San Francisco; the opening concert of The Wanamaker Organ's 100th anniversary, Philadelphia; Saint Thomas Church, New York; The Oregon Bach Festival; Woolsey Hall, Yale University; The Cleveland Museum of Art; West Point Cadet Chapel; Spivey Hall, Morrow, Georgia; Girard College, Philadelphia; The Wildwood Festival, Little Rock; Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago; Cathedral of the Madeleine, Salt Lake City; First Congregational Church, Los Angeles; The Auditorium, Independence, Missouri; Ned Rorem's 80th birthday celebration, Philadelphia; Portland City Hall, Maine; and the Crystal Cathedral, Los Angeles. In 2006 she performed solo recitals at all three of the major new American concert halls with pipe organs: Disney Hall, Los Angeles; Verizon Hall, Philadelphia; and Benaroya Hall, Seattle, as well as the 50th anniversary convention of the Organ Historical Society, and the national convention of the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

Ms. Belcher studied organ with David Spicer, John Weaver, Clarence Watters, David Craighead, and Wilma Jensen; she graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music, and earned her master's degree at The Eastman School of Music. A laureate of both the Saint Albans (England) and Chartres (France) international organ competitions -- two of the world's most prestigious such events -- she also took top prize in the American Guild of Organists' professional certification examinations.

Simon Johnson Master Class

Directions: Organist Simon Johnson of St. Paul's Cathedral, London took up his present position of Organist & Assistant director of music in 2008 and performs with the choir as well as leading the Cathedral's organ program. Simon was Head Chorister of Peterborough Cathedral Choir and went on to hold organ scholarships at Rochester, Norwich and St Paul’s Cathedrals, before becoming Director of Music at All Saints’ Church, Northampton and Assistant Master of Music and Director of the Abbey Girls’ Choir at St Albans Cathedral in 2001.

Simon's recordings have attracted widespread critical acclaim. As director, accompanist and soloist, Simon's work has taken him to France, Germany, Holland, Italy and the USA and has been broadcast on BBC television and radio. He has also worked as soloist and continuo player with the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Mozart Players, City of London Sinfonia, London Baroque and The Cardinall’s Musick.

Most recently, Simon has made a DVD about the St Paul’s Organ, an excerpt which can be viewed online. Future plans include more work in the field of organ transcription, the first performance of a new piece for organ by Peter Maxwell Davies and an appearance at the Fagersborg Organ Festival in Oslo in 2012.

Simon's master class will focus on British music. He will present a recital as part of the church's 44th Annual Organ Concert Series at 3:00 p.m. on the same day.

Rob HovencampRobert Hovencamp began his musical studies at an early age, then began studying at the University of Cincinnati’s prestigious College-Conservatory of Music in the preparatory department. He later earned his bachelor’s degree there, studying piano, organ, and opera performance. He also studied organ and liturgical music at the Cincinnati Bible Seminary. His organ teachers were W. Edwin Domb, and E. Wayne Berry. He continued his post graduate studies at Northwestern University, and the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists in Chicago.

Robert is currently the organist and choirmaster at St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church in San Marino, organist at Stephen S. Wise Temple in Los Angeles, and is a frequent guest organist at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. Previous posts include Associate Organist of Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church, and Interim Organist and Choir Director at Wilshire United Methodist Church in Los Angeles.

At St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church, Mr. Hovencamp oversaw the restoration and expansion of the Aeolian-Skinner/Rosales pipe organ, and instituted their Sunday Afternoon Recital Series. Now in it’s fourth year, the series presents recitals by Southern California’s finest local organists.

Robert has also appeared as a vocal soloist with the Los Angeles Opera, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Grant Park Symphony, as well as numerous other US opera companies.



Organist Ty Woodward is Organist and Choir Director at Hollywood United Methodist Church and Staff Organist at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.

His classical and theatre organ concerts have ranged from performances at Westminster Abbey, London; Trinity Church, New York; The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.; St. James Cathedral, Toronto and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles to Shea’s Theatre, Buffalo; the Byrd Theatre, Richmond; the Paramount Theatre, Cedar Rapids; the Alabama Theatre, Birmingham and the outdoor pipe organ in Balboa Park, San Diego where his July 2012 concert was attended by over 2,300 people. He has played several major works with orchestra including the Symphonie Concertante of Joseph Jongen and Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3.

His recording credits include a solo classical recording on the Aeolian-Skinner organ at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and a theatre organ recording on the Wurlitzer organ at the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester, N.Y. along with accompaniments for many choral recordings.

Ty holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance and a Masters degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern California, having studied organ with Cherry Rhodes and Ladd Thomas, and conducting with James Vail and Rodney Eichenberger. He is a former Dean of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and has served on the Commission of Liturgy and Music for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

As a pipe organ consultant, he has worked with numerous churches in the design and installation of their new pipe organs, and is the area representative for the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio.
