Organist James Walker in Recital

Organist James Walker, Director of Music/Organist-Choirmaster at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, is featured in a recital on the 1929 Skinner organ. The instrument, purchased in nearly pristine condition from St. Paul's Memorial Church, United Church of Christ, in Reading, Pennsylvania, where it was originally installed, was renovated and installed at St. Mark's in 2009 by the Connecticut firm of Foley-Baker.

The program includes music of Sowerby, Howells, Leighton, Bachlund, Mader, Hopkins and Dupré.

Peter Sykes is Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Historical Performance Department at Boston University, Director of Music at First Church in Cambridge, Congregational, and a member of the faculties of the Longy School of Music and the New England Conservatory. Holiday Program

The all-male, contemporary jazz/pop
a cappella vocal ensemble NPYNK was founded in 2008. With their exquisite vocal harmonies, this merry vocal band will provide a delightfully festive musical program. There will also be music for oboe and organ with oboist Catherine Del Russo, and a sing-along of holiday music, all in a gem of a chapel with fine acoustics. Participating will be organists  Connie Grisham and Phillip Allen Smith.

Digital Saturday

Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Admission: Free, open to the public. Optional continental breakfast (no charge) and lunch ($15) by reservation. Details.

Visits to three locations in the Pasadena area for demonstrations of digital instruments, hosted by Henry Hunt, Jim Raycroft, and Robert Tall. We will visit Church Organs, Inc., and Holliston United Methodist Church in Pasadena, and Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Arcadia. Optional continental breakfast and lunch will be available by reservation. Click for details.

Presidents Day Organ Festival in Whittier

Visits to three organs in Whittier with performances, guest speakers, a slide show, and organ demonstrations. We will visit First United Methodist Church, Whittier College Memorial Chapel, and First Friends Church, with an optional bonus visit to the Harris Organ Builders workshop. Lunch will be available by reservation for a modest charge. Bruce Neswick, Director of Cathedral Music and Organist of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, presents a session in Shatto Chapel entitled New Songs of Celebration Render: Suggestions for Enlivened Hymn-Playing. Click for a flyer with more information.

Attendees will be able to purchase half-price tickets for Mr. Neswick's recital to be presented the same afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
