Program Series
The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is pleased
to present a number of concerts and educational events each season,
centered around organ and choral music. Most of these
events are open to the public, with free admission; we invite members and non-members alike to attend our public events.

Buxtehude 300th Anniversary Concert

Organists Roger Daggy, Thomas Neenan, and Karen
Reinhard will be featured in a program of Baroque delights. This program of
solo organ works, cantatas, and
chamber music by Dieterich Buxtehude (ca. 1637 - 1707) will include two
organs, harpsichord, and an ensemble of voices and strings.
The program is in observance of the 300th anniversary year of
Buxtehude, who was organist of St. Mary's Church (pictured) in the north German city
of Lübeck. Come early to enjoy St. Matthew's beautiful campus and hear a
pre-concert talk by KUSC-FM morning host Kimberlea Daggy at 8:00
p.m. This event is co-sponsored with St. Matthew's Music Guild; see their

Sven-Ingvart Mikkelsen, organist of Fredericksborg Castle in Denmark,
will survey Scandinavian organ music from Buxtehude to the present,
including such composers as Bruhns, Hartmann, Gade, Olsson, Grieg,
Lindberg, and Møller.

One of four full-time organists of the world-famous Mormon
Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah, Clay Christiansen brings his
virtuosic artistry to the 1929 Kimball organ in the Wilshire Boulevard Temple.
This is an opportunity to hear a vintage instrument not often heard in
recitals.
The program will include music by Mendelssohn, Reger, Reubke,
Schreiner, and Sowerby. Organ builder Manuel Rosales will speak about the
Kimball organ and the revival of expressive Romantic organ building. A
reception will follow the program.

Los Angeles organist Philip Allen Smith performs on the organ
in the chapel of First United Methodist Church in
Pasadena. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy this recently renovated chapel
and vintage organ that are not familiar to
most of us. The program will include seasonal music by Bach, Buxtehude, Dandrieu,
Distler, Barber, and Myron Roberts. Phil Smith is Organ Conservator of
Walt Disney Concert Hall.

We will be joined by members of the Inland
Empire, Long Beach, and Orange County chapters - a fine opportunity to
meet colleagues from other AGO chapters in our area.
We will visit
Claremont Presbyterian Church, Claremont United Church of Christ
Congregational, and Lyman Hall and Bridges Hall of Music (pictured) at Pomona College. William Peterson, Carey
Robertson, and Geri DeMasi will
perform and demonstrate instruments, and Orpha Ochse will speak about the
history of organs in Claremont. Dr. Ochse has organized this event.

The American Guild of Organists honors international concert artist and
current AGO president Frederick Swann for his distinguished
musical career and his service to AGO. A national event including a recital and a gala
reception to benefit the AGO Endowment Fund. You may attend the recital
only, or both the recital and the reception.
Tickets for the recital only are $20 in advance until April 11 and are available from First
Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Contact

Combined tickets for the recital and the gala benefit reception are
$100 and are available until March 14 from the AGO On-Line Store ($75

Organist Marija Lončar Strohm plays a
varied recital using both the chapel and sanctuary organs at First Baptist
Church of Los Angeles. The program includes familiar works by French
composers, as well as works by less-familiar (to us) Croatian composers Luka Sorkočević and Albe Vidaković. Also on the program will be a Fantasia for
Two Players by Josef Labor, played by Ms. Strohm and her husband Lawrence
Tudor Strohm.
Ms. Strohm is a native of Croatia and holds a
master's degree in organ performance from the University of Southern
California. She is organist and music director of New Hope Presbyterian
Church in Pasadena.
